Rollable displays for use in ultra-mobile devices

In a world of increasing consumption of data any time, any place and anywhere, the dilemma of having a large display and yet a small, light-weight, ultramobile device is becoming more and more prominent. Polymer Visions unique solution of rolling up the display breaks down this dilemma, enabling displays that are larger than the device they are in. A 0.1mm thin 6-inch electrophoretic SVGA display is presented that can be rolled up when not in use. In its rolled up state, the display is small enough to fit into a regular mobile phone. The display can be rolled up to a radius of 6mm over 25000 times without any degeneration. Using Polymer Visions proprietary controller, 32 grey levels can be rendered. Furthermore, the display has an integrated finger touch sensor that is compatible with rolling up. The display is manufactured using Polymer Visions own G2.5 AM-LCD line and a material set that allows lowtemperature processing. Looking ahead, Polymer Visions flexible display platform will be the basis for color displays offering video speed and new device concepts, enabling converged devices that can be used in all kinds of applications now covered by e-readers, smartphones and tablet PCs.
