SilkinkTM Technology for Multi-stable Trans-Reflective Color Displays
There are many attempts to work on high optical efficiency reflective mode color displays 1,2. Recently, Halation Photonics Corporation developed a unique display technology named Silkink?, which can be used as trans-reflective static full color displays. The Silkink? Technology is compatible with both complex TFT backplane and simple passive matrix structure. Halation has successfully demonstrated an 11-inch display using passive matrix structure. The Silkink? Display with passive matrix structure comprises a Multi-stable Liquid Crystal (MSLC) layer and a color filter layer in between the ITO patterned glass substrates. There is no polarizer and it is using color filters to realize a full color dot matrix display. The innovative Silkink? Display is a double-sided static display with 360° viewing angle, which can show a colorful static image at both sides due to the scattering effect of the MSLC layer. In addition, the MSLC material has memory effect and no power is needed to maintain the molecular alignment status after driving. This feature makes it possible to design a large-size passive matrix display of high resolution. Therefore, it is an energy-efficient green technology. In addition, it is a trans-reflective display without spatial separation of reflective area and transmissive area within an integrated pixel. It can reflect and scatter ambient light source or sunlight within a single pixel. Silkink? Is also an eco-friendly technology using available passive matrix manufacturing lines in conventional TN or STN based LCD factories for mass production.
