Evaluation Metric for Binocular Luminance Difference

Although many 3D display measurement papers have been published 1-13, little research has been done on 3D measurement evaluation metric. In this paper, we discuss the binocular luminance difference (BLD) and the corresponding calculation method. BLD, which means a difference in the perspective by which luminance of an object is viewed by ones two eyes, is a common phenomenon due to most 3D displays has angular depended optical characteristics. Binocular luminance in BLD case could be calculate by geometric mean or arithmetic mean, and we also proposed root mean square (RMS) method to report the perceived luminance in this paper. We discussed the difference between the three methods from theory, measurement and human factor perspectives.
