Fast Motion Detection Based on Intensity Difference between Image Frames

In order to reduce the complicacy and improve accuracy of motion detection for dynamic false contour (DFC) improvement in plasma display panels (PDPs), a real-time motion detection method based on intensity difference between two image frames is proposed. The displayed image is divided into image blocks. Then the intensity difference of an image block between two frames is computed. The current motion status of each image block is determined according to the intensity difference and the continuous motion times. The experimental results show that accuracy of motion detection can reach 99.3% when the interval frames n between frame i and j and the continuous motion times m are both in the range of 3 to 6, the product of m and n is in the range of 15 to 30, and intensity difference threshold Bth is 100. The circuit implementation is easy and it meets to the requirement of motion detection in realtime for DFC improvement.
