Speaking Abstract China Display / Asia Display 2011

With the popularity of smartphones, tablets and notebook PCs, consumers are now spending more time than ever using rich mobile multimedia applications. However, with increased usage comes increased power consumption, particularly by the display, which can drain the devices battery before days end. Here we present a display, based upon a patented MEMS-based Digital Micro Shutter (DMS?) that modulates the light in a transflective display. Combined with a thin film transistor (TFT) active matrix backplane and a highly efficient backlight, this technology has achieved 24-bit color video, 135% NTSC (CIE 1976) color gamut, high contrast ratio and >170° view angle displays at % the power consumption of comparable LCD displays.
