Display Quality for Smart-Phone Displays

Nowadays, multi-media functions have been involved in the smart-phones. Therefore, display quality has recently become very important for smart-phone displays. In this study, four smart-phone displays, two AMOLED panels and two AH-IPS panels, were evaluated for their colorimetric characteristics and characterization performances. Firstly, the spatial uniformity, spatial independence, ambient lighting effect on contrast, color gamut, chromaticity constancy, and channel independence of the smartphone displays were tested. Then, based on the assessment results of the characteristics, five conventional colorimetric characterization models (GOG, S-Curve I, S-Curve II, PLCC, and PLVC) were employed to predict the device-independent CIE tristimulus values from the device-dependent digital inputs. The testing results show that the AMOLED panels have larger color gamut than the AH-IPS ones, while the AH-IPS panels outperform the AMOLED ones in spatial independence, chromaticity constancy, and channel independence evaluation. Compared with the AMOLED displays, the contrast of AH-IPS ones decreases moderately with the increase of the ambient illumination level. The detailed data analysis indicates that the AH-IPS displays can achieve higher characterization accuracy, while the AMOLED panels suffer from their poor channel independence.
