Modeling of Ambilight Using a LED Luminance Distribution Method

The Philips TVs with Ambient Lighting Technology (Ambilight?) produce light effects on the wall behind the TV. The light effects are not only useful for atmosphere creation, but they also enhance the viewing experience and reduce the eye fatigue when watching TV. Making several real Ambilight prototypes to optimize the performance/cost balance can be time consuming and quite expensive. Therefore, a simulation system could be helpful to reproduce the light effects around a TV as if they were generated by a real Ambilight system. The developed Ambilight simulation model is based on the single LED luminance distribution model, where the light effects are created by superposition of the light from all LEDs. The LEDs are assumed to be mounted on the back of TV and are pointing in a specific direction towards the wall. The model verification was done using a 46-inch Philips LCD TV with Ambilight Spectra 3 (three sided mode). The results show that this simple simulation model can accurately reproduce Ambilight profiles. With this flexible model, we can simulate Ambilight with different modes, different shapes, different sizes, and different positions to study the main factors influencing the viewing experience.
