Rewriting Speed of Optical Rewritable Electronic Paper

Effect of interaction between liquid crystal and photoalignment material on speed of optical rewriting process was investigated. It was shown that properties of liquid crystal have significant influence on rewriting speed of ORW e-paper. For ORW cells with same photoalignment material and different liquid crystals of similar structure, the azimuthal anchoring energy is mainly dependent on dose of exposure before saturation. With the same dose, the azimuthal anchoring energy is the same. Then smaller frank elastic constant K22 corresponds to larger twist angle, meaning larger rewriting speed. Six different LC cells with same boundary conditions (one substrate was covered with rubbed PI and other with photo sensitive rewritable SD1) and under the same illumination intensity (450nm, 80mw/cm2) was tested in experiments. For two well known LC materials E7 K22 is larger) and 5CB K22 is smaller), it required 11 seconds and 6 seconds correspondingly to change alignment direction for generating image information. With suitable liquid crystal, operation speed of ORW technology for e-paper application can be obviously improved.
