Fluorine-containing microcapsules with excellent barrier property for electrophoretic displays
The barrier property of microcapsules is important for the application of the electrophoretic display (EPDs). In this work, the fluorine was introduced into the capsule wall for the first time to improve the barrier property of the microcapsules using hydrocarbon/fluorocarbon composite surfactant. The microcapsules were prepared from gelatin (GE), sodium carboxymethylcellulose (NaCMC) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) / perfluoro-nonene oxy benzene sulfonate (OBS) composite surfactants by complex coacervation method. The hydrophobic interaction and hydrogen bonding between NaCMC and SDS/OBS enhanced the adsorption of NaCMC at the oil/water interface and facilitated the formation of capsule wall. Microcapsules were characterized in respect of morphology and thermal stability. The experimental results indicated that the elastic, optical transparent microcapsules owning smooth surface and capsule wall of compact structure can be obtained by adjusting the concentration ratio of SDS/OBS. The microcapsules with exce llent barrier property were obtained with 0.5 mM SDS/0.2 mM OBS-GE-NaCMC. Based on the prepared microcapsules, a matrix character display prototype with high contrast ratio was fabricated driven by static mode and operated @ 9V direct current.
