Measurement of Visual Fatigue Caused By Head Mounted Display

Head Mounted Display (HMD) is a special type of 3D (three-dimensional) stereoscopic display, which can provide a rich and realistic visual experience. However, its negative impacts causing visual fatigue make it meaningful to find indicators to measure visual fatigue caused by it. Research has been done to investigate the influence of short-term and long-term using of HMD on visual fatigue by means of objective measurements as well as subjective questionnaire. The results of objective measurements show that: a more precise visual acuity measurement is needed to check for the influence of visual fatigue on static visual acuity. 3D fusion ranges both in front of and behind screen decrease at the beginning of the experiment (about 15minutes) then increase. In the first 15 minutes of using HMD, there is an increasing tendency of the acceptability threshold of crosstalk and blink frequency, but a decreasing tendency of IMC(index of mental capability), then fluctuated. The results of questionnaire indicate that the visual fatigue increases with time. At the beginning (first 20 minutes), the degree of symptoms reflecting visual fatigue increases steeply, then the increment becomes much slowly. Among all the symptoms, Dizzy and want to close the eye is the most severe one.
