Depth Perception Experiment on the Stereoscopic LCD Display
Three-Dimensional (3D) displays have become prominent for many applications. It is important for the stereoscopic image to create a faithful depth perception of the portray object or scene. But even the images showed on stereoscopic LCD display are exactly calculated based on binocular parallax; the depth perceptions are not same as real world due to focus cues - accommodation and blur in the retinal image - specify the depth of the display rather than the depicted scene. There are also many factors influence the depth perception, such as display position and the image attributes. In order to get the relationship between the depth of stereoscopic image and different display position and the image attributes, we designed the depth perception test on stereoscopic LCD display. In this experiment, a cube is constructed by perspective drawing method, which frontal plane is a square with certain side-size, cubic depth size can be adjusted by participant and gray scale of every plane refer to the value of the 3D cube in Microsoft office. Its original depth length is randomly generated in the range from 0.5 to 1.5 times of the frontal planes side length. The cube is displayed at the position selected randomly from eight positions away from four observed depths, which are all in the range of Percivals zone of comfort. If the participant feels it is not an exact cube, he/she can click the left/right mouse key to increase/decrease its depth size until he/she feel it is so. The results show that depth perception to the same cube displayed at different positions is not the same and it also demonstrates that the perceived depth is different from the value calculated exactly. The results could contribute to estimating the depth parameters of 3D scene when stereoscopic image on 3D display being constructed.
