Two-dimensional PIC-MCC Simulations of the Electron Multiplication in a Gas Electron Multiplier
The electron multiplication process in one cell of a GEM was simulated with a two-dimensional PIC-MCC simulation model for the first time. The electric field and potential distribution were calculated, and the electron avalanche process was analyzed. The simulation results coincide with the former investigation results, but indicate that a significant part of the avalanched electrons are collected by the GEM foil, thereby reducing the effective gain by about a factor of 2.
