Mechanical Property of Unidirectional Basalt Fiber Composites with Hole
Due to its low price and high mechanical property, basalt fiber is emerging as a novel reinforcement for fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) instead of glass fiber. In order to apply basalt fiber reinforced plastic (BFRP) into practical use, many researches were begun to carry out. In using process, composite is usually made hole for different needs. These holes always have significant influence to the structure. The current study was investigated the mechanical properties of different type 0/90/0 specimens of BFRP which was fabricate by hand lay-up methods with unsaturated polyester. The tensile property in particular the effect diameter of holes and stress concentration factor (SFC) on the notched strength was mainly discussed. The results show the 0/90/0 specimens were still maintained good tensile resistance.
