The Green Manufacturing Technology of In-situ Irradiation Curing for Composites

In order to reduce the cost of the thermoset composites manufacturing process and minimize the environmental pollution, an environmentally friendly and low cost composites manufacturing method by in-situ irradiation curing was proposed. This manufacturing method was implemented by a robotic fiber placement system integrated with UV or low-energy EB as irradiating curing source, using corresponding UV or EB curable carbon fiber prepregs as material. Composite parts were fabricated and experimental results showed that composites will be fully cured and have a good mechanical properties at UV-curable prepregs with exposure up to 1.73 mJ/mm2 and fiber placement velocity is 7.5mm / s or less. Besides, the in-situ low-energy EB curing process was achieved when penetration depth of unit density is 260μm(260g/m2) at electron beam acceleration voltage is 150KeV.
