Evaluation of Potential Selenium Biofortiflcation in Wheat
Introduction Selenium (Se) is an element that is essential to human health as a necessary constituent of more than twenty enzymes, and Se deficiency can result in severe diseases (Kato et a),, 2010). Wheat is one of the most important food crops worldwide. Selenium content in wheat can be biofortified by genetic or agronomic strategies (Broadley et ai,, 2010; Lyons et al., 2005), including genetically engineering techniques (or marker assisted breeding approaches) and/or by applying liquid or granular Se fertilizers.
