Studies on functional diversity of plant-specific type-Ⅲ polyketide synthases
Plant polyphenols such as chalcone, stilbene, phloroglucinol, chromone, and curcuminoid are one of the largest and important families of natural secondary products. Their chemical structures are rich in variety as well as pharmaceutical activities. Interestingly, recent studies on the biosynthesis of polyphenols have begun to reveal that the remarkable structural diversity of polyphenol scaffolds is produced by a group of chalcone synthase (CHS) superfamily of type-Ill polyketide synthases (PKSs) 1,2). Here, I will introduce structure function relationships and catalytic mechanisms of recently obtained two novel plant-specific type-Ill PKSs.
