QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS OF GRAIN BOUNDARY PRECIPITATES IN 2024 ALUMINUM ALLOY BY USING 3D ELECTRON TOMOGRAPHY
Three-dimensional (3D) tomography of the precipitate in 2024 aluminum alloy was conducted by STEM-HAADF technique. It was found that there exist three kinds of phases distributed in the aluminum matrix: rod-like dispersoids (Al20Cu2Mn3),needle-like S phase (Al2CuMg) within grains and grain boundary precipitate (GBP,also S phase) showing both spherical and lenticular shape. The GBP particles distribute densely along grain boundary. The parameters describing the shape and the distribution of the GBP particles were calculated based on the 3D tomography. The results show that the 3D electron tomography is better to quantify the GBP.
