Novel Form of Photonic Crystals for Bioimaging Contrast Enhancement

Taking advantage of the unique optical properties of diatoms, we have developed a magnetite decorated diatom photonic structure system that selectively backscatters near infrared light. Our calculation indicates this wavelength-selectivity is associated to the pseudo photonic band gap of the twodimensional photonic crystal approximated from the periodicity of diatom frustules. This structural system demonstrates great potential for contrast enhancement of bioimaging.
