Analysis of sulfur speciation on chalcopyrite bioleached with mesophile Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans

The typical mesophile Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans was used to leach chalcopyrite. The characteristics of mineral surface, main components of mineral and the sulfur speciation on the mineral surface were investigated combining with SEM, XRD and sulfur Kedge XANES spectroscopy. Leaching experimental results showed that A. ferrooxidans significantly improved the solution of copper and the leaching rate of chalcopyrite was up to 1.8 g/L after 24 days process. The SEM results showed that the surface of the mineral was obviously corrupted after 24 days leaching with microbes and on which there were some visible crystalline floccules. Leaching products were found accumulating during the leaching process, which might be jarosite according to the XRD analysis. The sulfur K-edge spectra indicated that sulfur components were composed by chalcopyrite and jarosite, with contents percentages of 8. 3% and 68.9% , respectively. The jarosite sediments on the chalcopyrite surface might be the main component of the passivation layer during the leaching process with A. ferrooxidans.
