Bioleaching of chalcopyrite by mixed cultures of Leptospirillum ferriphilum and Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans

The bioleaching of chalcopyrite was investigated using a mixed culture consisting of iron-oxidizing L. ferriphilum and sulfur-oxidizing A. thiooxidans, in which different pH values, temperatures, ratios of L. ferriphilum to A. thiooxidans, total inoculation amount, and pulp concentration were examined. It is found that the mixed cultures are more efficient than a single pure culture. Increasing pulp concentration decreases the leaching rate of copper, while various total inoculation amount and different ratios of L. ferriphilum to A. thiooxidans have a little effect on the final leaching rate. Different temperatures and pH values also affect the leaching rate. In addition, certain value of redox potential is beneficial to the decomposition of chalcopyrite during bioleaching. Jarosite and sulfur precipitation formed in leaching process are observed using XRD and SEM/EDS, indicating that these are the major components of a passivation layer that blocks continuous copper extraction.
