Adsorption characteristics and mechanism of biosolubilization of rock phosphate by Aspergillus niger

Biosolubilization of rock phosphate ( RP) using Aspergillus niger, a phosphate solubilising fungus isolated from the rhizosphere of wheat, as an inoculant to convert insoluble form of phosphorus (P) to soluble P was investigated. Phosphate solubilizing activity of the strain was associated with the release of organic acids and a drop of the pH in the National Botanical Research Institute s phosphate (NBRIP) growth medium. The mechanism of phosphate solubilization by A. niger included direct and indirect action of the strain on RP. Cells of A. niger attached rapidly to RP surface and then excreted organic acids and followed by a decrease in the pH of the culture medium. A negative correlation between pH and content of soluble P but a positive correlation between concentration of organic acids excreted and content of soluble P was found in this study.
