Bio-oxidation pretreatment of a sulfide concentrate including gold to improve the utilization of valuable elements
The purpose of this study was to test the feasibility of using iron and sulfide oxidizing bacteria for the bio-oxidation pre-treatment of high sulfide concentrate including gold. The high sulfide concentrate was pretreated by bio-oxidation using Thiobacillus ferrooxidans in a tank to decompose the pyrite and arsenopyrite so as to expose the gold for cyanide leaching. The effect of pH, inoculation concentration, pulp density, redox potential, and aeration amount and ore particle size on the biooxidation pretreatment process was studied. The results showed that the appropriate conditions for the bio-oxidation pretreatment of this sulfide concentrate are; pH 2. 0, inoculation concentration of 10% , pulp density of 5% , and aeration amount of 0. 1 L/(L ? min). Under such conditions, the Fe oxidizing rate could be over 70% after 9 d biooxidation. The smaller ore particle size is more beneficial to such pretreatment and the formation of the precipitation of ferric arsenate is unfavorable to iron and arsenic leaching.
