Hydronium jarosite formation and iron balance in bioheapleaching of Zijinshan copper sulphide

The influence of temperature, pH and iron concentration on hydronium jarosite formation was investigated through the thermodynamic analysis and kinetic experiments based on the bioheapleaching system of Zijinshan copper mine. The comprehensive analysis of XRD, TG - DTG and SEM showed hydronium jarosite with great crystal structure was formed in the leaching solution. The analysis of thermodynamics suggested temperature, pH and iron concentration were important factors of hydronium jarosite formation, and among them temperature was the key factor. Kinetic experiments of hydronium jarosite formation also indicated that pH, iron concentration and temperature played an important role for the hydronium jarosite formation. Elevated temperature could accelerate the kinetics of hydronium jarosite formation and increase copper extraction. The results indicate that hydronium jarosite could be readily formed to remove iron in the bioheapleaching system of Zijinshan copper mine under leaching environment of TFe 50 g/L, pH 0. 8 - 1. 0 and 45 - 601.
