Preliminary study on the bioleaching behavior of a high acid-consuming pentlandite/pyrrhotite ore 2: Pure vs mixed culture
The bioleaching of an acid-consuming mineral sulfide ore was studied to characterize the oxidation process using pure cultures of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans - LR or A. thiooxidans - FG01 or mixed cultures with both strains. The experiments were carried out in shake flasks with ore 5% ( w/v) , at pH 1. 8 with the iron oxidizing strain (pure and mixed cultures) and pH 2. 8 with the sulphur oxidizing strain, 150 rpm and 30T! , without exogenous energy source. The test showed that the nickel extraction in the mixed cultures was higher than that in the pure cultures. Copper extraction the pure culture of A. ferrooxidans was similar with both strains. The precipitation of ferric compounds was observed in all flasks. The XRD results showed the formation of new peaks as violarite, jarosite and tenorite. That result could indicate that the generation of precipitates can affect the solubilization of Ni and Cu from this kind of ore.
