Copper extraction from primary ore using Acidithiobacillus spp. and Leptospirillum ferrooxidans microorganisms

The Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans e Leptospirillum ferrooxidans microorganisms were tested for promoting the bioleaching of sulphide minerals comprising a primary copper ore in a reaction system bearing a biosurfactant. Bioleaching tests were accomplished in agitated flasks, taking into consideration a 22 complete factorial design with a central point. Running those experiments, it was verified that the bio-surfactant concentration and cell population influence the copper extraction by the microorganisms under study. In order to define the suitable biosurfactant concentration, additional experiments were carried out bearing in mind the trends previously defined in the factorial design. In that step the parameters influencing the bioleaching process were monitored, such as pH, redox potential, and ionic iron species. The highest copper extraction, by following the copper concentration in the aqueous phase/leachate out of the aforementioned reaction system, was 64. 6% , which was reached after running the bioleaching test for 28 days taking into consideration the addition of 5 mg/L of biosurfactant.
