Comparative bioleaching of chalcopyrite concentrate with mesophiles and moderate thermophiles in the stirred tank reactor and their ecology analysis

Bioleaching of chalcopyrite concentrate by mesophiles at 30℃, and moderate thermophiles at 481 in the stirred tank reactor was carried out respectively. The results showed that moderate thermophiles obtained good performance for chalcopyrite bioleaching and the copper concentration could achieve to 13.4 g/L after 40 days, while during bioleaching with mesophiles, the copper concentration was only 8. 1 g/L. Furthermore, the concentration of total iron extracted by moderate thermophiles was also higher than that by mesophiles. The analysis of ore residue after bioleached indicates that more sulphur was formed during mesophilic bioleaching than that in moderately thermophilic bioleaching, and this is one of the major reasons why copper extraction by mesophiles was lower than that by moderate thermophiles. The ecology analysis results showed that community composition of moderate thermophiles was Acidithiobacillus caldus, Leptospirillum ferriphilum, Sulfobacillus thermosulfidooxidans and Sulfobacillus acidophilus, and the composition of mesophiles was A. ferrooxidans, A. thiooxidans, L. ferrooxidans and Acidiphilium spp.
