Bioleaching of copper smelter slag

This paper considers sulphuric acid and microbial leaching of copper smelter slag. The rate of leaching and copper recovery were examined. Samples of copper smelter slag from RTB Bor, Serbia containing 4. 2% Cu, 34. 5% Fe(II) , 30. 9% SiO2, were used in this study. This slag sample was grounded to 90% <44 (jum for the experiment. Mineralogical study showed that this slag consists mainly (65%) in the form of fayalite structure. More than 75% is in the form of copper sulfides. Microbial leaching was carried out in a laboratory using a 2 L separation funnel at 30 T) with mesophilic mixed culture, pH 2 and 10 days residence time. Overall result shows copper recovery of 82% and 99% in sulphuric acid and microbial leaching respectively. The microbial copper leaching rate of smelter slag reached a value of approximately 6. 7 mg/ ( L ? h). By optimization of the culture condition such as; higher solid concentration, particle size distribution, agitation-aeration , carbon dioxide requirements, higher temperature and acidity of the medium, would decrease the residence time and improve the overall microbial leaching performance of the slag. This method also reduces both silica gel formation and iron coextraction but with good filterable cake formation. Therefore, it clearly demonstrates that bioleaching can be effectively used to extract copper from amorphous copper smelter slags.
