Isolation and identification of a mesophilic iron oxidizing bacteria from a Zambias AMD
Based on its physiological characteristic, such as pH, temperature, and its ability to use ferrous iron as energy source, a mesophilic iron oxidizing bacterium has been isolated from an Acid Mine Drainage ( AMD) sampled at Chambishi Copper Mine ( Zambia). The strain is rod-shaped, and slightly motile. It can grow autotrophically on ferrous iron, and its optimal growth condition is pH 2, 0 at 301. 16S rRNA and gyrB genes sequences analysis revealed that the new isolated bacterium is phylogenetically clustered to Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans species, and then is designated Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans strain Foxl. Bioleaching experiment revealed that the new isolate can efficiently improve pyrite dissolution, and an iron extraction rate of 75% was approximately obtained after 18 days leaching.
