Desulphurizing from vanadium-bearing titanomagnetite concentrates by Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans

The sulfur content of the vanadium-bearing titanomagnetite concentrates is normally high and cannot meet the quality request for iron ore concentrates. It is difficult to desulfurize them by traditional processes such as, magnetic separation and floatation, because more than 90% of their fur are in form of pyrrhotite. Biodesulfurization of the vanadium-bearing titanomagnetite concentrates by Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans was researched. The results showed that desulphurizing process can be improved effectively in the presence of Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans. The biodesulphurization rate could reach up to 79. 7% after bioleached 15 days with 10% of pulp density. The sulfur content was reduced markedly from 0. 69 mass% to 0. 14 mass% . It is a key point to keep the solution pH stable during bioleaching because the alkaline minerals containing in the vanadium-bearing titanomagnetite concentrates consume acid inevitably. An appropriate biodesulfurization efficiency can be achieved by optimizing the factors affecting bioleaching process and the biodesulfurization is an alternative process for the vanadium-bearing titanomagnetite concentrates for being used environment friendly and efficiently.
