Irgiredmet experience on gold biometallurgy

This paper presents a brief overview of IRGIREDMET experience on gold biometallurgy. The first studies on gold biometallurgy at Irgiredmet started at the beginning of the 1970s. It was connected with gold dissolution by bioleaching. Special bacterial strains and products of their metabolism which were able to dissolve gold were founded and separated. The studies on dissolved and colloidal gold precipitation by Aspergillus niger and Aspergillus orizal fungoid microorganisms were also done. The pioneer study on selective bioheterocoagulation of fine and colloidal gold was conducted. It was found that gold grade in flotation plants tails may be 10% -20% decreased using gold bio-hetero coagulation with flotation of bio aggregates. This fact was confirmed by industrial scale tests conducted at Taseevsky flotation plant (the Chita region, Russia). The most important part of Irgiredmet developments in an area of biometallurgy was the complex of theoretical and practical testwork called Biogeotechnology of gold and silver according to the State technical research program Latest bioengineering methods. The main direction of the program was biooxidation of gold bearing sulfides (pyrite, arsenopyrite etc. ) using Thiobacillus Ferrooxidans and Thiobacillus Thiooxidans bacterial strains. Different aspects of stirred tank and heap bioleaching including main regularities of sulfide biooxidation, sufficient degree of sulfide oxidation for maximum gold recovery, the behavior of gold and silver minerals with determination of dissolution of this metals during bio oxidation, biooxidation amenability tests for concentrates from operating and designed mines of Russia and CIS, the effective methods of neutralisation and detoxification of biohydrometallurgy products etc were studied.
