Bioleaching of flotation chalcopyrite concentrate by a moderately thermophilic enrichment
A mixed culture of moderately thermophiles was enriched at 451 from several acid mine drainage ( AMD) samples collected from copper mines in China. A preliminary study suggested that the mixed culture could extract copper from chalcopyrite effectively. Effects of initial pH, value pulp density, temperature and rotation rate on chalcopyrite dissolution were investigated by a series of bioleaching experiments. All experiments were carried out in 250 mL batch shake flasks. The pH, Eh, concentrations of copper, ferrous ion, ferric ion and cells were monitored. The results showed that initial pH, temperature and rotation rate were the significantly influencing factors. Comparing with others factors, although pulp density had less effect, the extraction rates would decrease obviously when pulp density was too high or low. Under the optimum condition of initial pH 1.5, temperature 451, pulp density 2% and rotation rate 200 rpm, 90. 9% of copper was extracted within 15 days.
