Antimony accumulation in wild plants around a large Sb deposit area
Identification of hyperaccumulator has aroused high concern on phytoremediation for polluted soils by heavy metals. Antimony (Sb) contents in soils and wild plants collected from an antimony mine area in Guizhou Province, China were investigated. Results showed that the soils were severely polluted by Sb with concentrations ranging from 267 to 5536 mg/kg. Sb widely occurred in all plants with various concentrations ranging from 23 mg/ kg to 23522 mg/kg. The species of Chenopodium album Linn. , Sedum emarginatum Migo and Sedum lineare Thunb were identified to accumulate Sb more than 1000 mg/kg. Sb contents in the underground tissues of most plants were higher than those of aboveground tissues, and decreased with the following order: root > inflorescence > leaf > stem. The bioaccumulation coefficient (BAC) for most plants was less than 1, but Sedum emarginatum Migo, Plantago asiatica Linn. , Sedum lineare Thunb, Gnaphalium affine D. Don and Dichrocephala auriculata (Thunb. ) Druce were with BAC of 3. 9, 1.0, 6. 7, 1. 7 and 1. 1, respectively. Moreover, the transfer factors (BTC) of most plants were below 1, except for Chenopodium ambrosioides Linn, with BTC at 1. 2. All plants in the study area were not identified as Sb hyperaccumulator, however, the species of Chenopodium album linn. , Sedum emarginatum Migo and Sedum lineare Thunb were found to have potential of highly accumulating Sb and to present strong tolerance to Sb. Thus, these species could be applied as alternative plants for phytoremediating on Sb-polluted soils, and applied in industry mining.
