A New Foveation Ray Casting Approach for Real-time Rendering of 3D Scenes
In recent years, several techniques have been proposed to simulate the gaze physiology of Human Visual System (HVS). It is believed that this effect is caused by the spacevariant distribution of photoreceptors in the retina. This paper presents a real-time foveation rendering algorithm to simulate the gaze contingent vision of a 3D scene. The novelty of our approach lies in three aspects, namely, an image-space adaptive sampling mask adhering to the Contrast Sensitivity Function (CSF) of the HVS, an image based multi-layer representation of the 3D scene constructed by depth peeling and an efficient Depth Interval Refinement (DIR) technique for accelerating the GPU-based ray casting process. We demonstrate high quality and performance of the proposed approach with a variety of examples, and provide comparisons with recent methods.
