Acid Volatile Sulfides and Simultaneously Extracted Metals in Sediments from Hongfeng Lake
In order to study the distribution characteristics and potential toxicity of heavy metals in sediment samples, acid volatile sulfides (AVS) and simultaneously extracted metals (SEM including Cu, Ni, Zn, Cd and Pb) were determined. The mean concentrations of heavy metals in the form of SEM were in the order of Zn > Cu > Ni > Cd > Pb, while the AVS and SEM concentrations and the SEM/AVS molar ratios were calculated as follows: the AVS concentrations in sediments ranged from 6.356 to 16.866 μmol·g-1 (dry weight) with the mean value of 12.410 μmol-g-1 and variation coefficient of 28.19%. The SEM concentrations were between 0.504 and 1.222 μmol·g-1 (dry weight) with the mean value of 0.833 μmol·g-1 and the variation coefficient of 31.90%. The SEM/AVS molar ratios were from 0.030 to 0.162 with the mean value of 0.074 μmol·g-1 and the variation coefficient of 52.68%. The SEM/AVS molar ratios were much smaller than 1.0, apparently indicating that the heavy metals under investigation did not pose a toxicity overall in all sediments.
