Characterization of Major Components in Melting Process of Fly Ash from Municipal Solid Wastes Incinerator

This study was conducted to investigate the migration patterns of major compositions of the fly ash from refuse incinerator in the melting process. The experiments were performed in a high temperature melting furnace with controllable temperature. The parameters investigated included main compositional contents, phase constituents, vaporation rate, volume reduction rate and alkalinity. The results were showed as follows: 1) In the melting process, the contents of CaO, A12O3, and SiO2 in fly ash increased as the temperature increasing, but the contents of Cl, K2O, Na2O and SO3 decreased remarkably from initial 20.59%, 8.58%, 3.81%, 10.74% to about 0.15%, 0.04%, 0.23%, and 0.22% at the end, respectively. These demonstrated that higher amount of Cl, K, Na and S in original fly ash could lead to more vaporation in the form of chloride and sulfates in the process. Those volatilization forms were further verified by XRD analyzing result. 2) The decomposition and vaporation of the salts in the fly ash mainly occurred in the temperatures between 1150 ℃ and 1250 ℃, which was approximately 100-200 ℃ lower than melting temperature. 3) The alkalinity decreased as melting temperature increased, and tended to be stable and maintained around 0.95 after reaching the melting temperature.
