Municipal Solid Waste Management as Urban Mining:Study Cases from Peru and Japan

In the expanding and more cpmplex urban environment, different types of wastes become increasingly less concentrated and more mixed. Urban mining in this paper is understood as the recovery of valuable material from solid waste sources, and defined as the result of three activities: i) source separation, ii) waste collection and transportation, and iii) waste treatment. The study utilizes an analytical framework to evaluate the interrelation of these three components and proposes key considerations to design material recovery as profitable activity. Study cases from the cities of Chiclayo in Peru and Kitakyushu in Japan are presented.
