Research and Practice on Vegetation Restoration of Side Slope of Red Mud Disposal Site

Based on laboratory experiments and field tests, this paper presents practicable technologies for the prevention and control of pollution caused from the red mud dams with high pH value (pH 10.5) and steep slope, including selection of vegetation plants, soil improvement, vegetation technique, etc. Since 2004, the area of vegetation restoration of slope of Pingnan red mud disposal site, which is affiliated with Guangxi Branch of Aluminum Corporation of China Limited, has been up to 12 hectares while vegetation coverage reaches above 90% of the vegetation area. Ecological environment quality of the dam area and its periphery area has been improved greatly. At present, vegetation engineering activity for pollution control of the red mud disposal site has been playing an important role in the safe and clean production of the corporation. In this paper, the procedure of the red mud dam construction and vegetation of the dam slope is also introduced.
