Impacts of Conditioner Dose on Dewaterability and Physicochemical Characteristics of Activated Sludge

In this paper, a high molecular weight cationic organic polymer of CZ-8698 was employed to condition the activated sludge (AC), and the variation of physicochemical characteristics of the sewage sludge, such as dewaterability, surface electrical property, morphology and strength, with CZ-8698 doses were analyzed. Then some relations between the corresponding parameters to above characteristics and the conditioner doses were also investigated. The results showed that CZ-8698 doses had a great impact on the dewaterability and physicochemical characteristics of AC. The optimal range for CZ-8698 dose was 4.28-7.13g·kg-1·SS-1, and the corresponding minimum values for capillary suction Time (CST) and specific resistance to filtration (SRF) were (12.62±1.39)s and 0.56×1012m·kg-1, correspondingly. While at the CZ-8698 dose much less than 4.28g· kg-1·SS-1, the viscosity of supernatant after AC centrifugation presented the minimum value. In the optimum CZ-8698 dosage range, both the zeta potential and surface charge density of colloids in AC centrifugal supernatant changed into positive values from negative ones, AC floes showed the most irregular boundary or surface and much compact structure, which was demonstrated by their fractal dimensions of 1.09(one-dimensional fractal dimension, D1) and 1.51 (two-dimensional fractal dimension, D2). Although the particle size for AC floes increased with the increase of CZ-8698 doses, the strength of these floes gradually tended to keep constant at the conditioner doses higher than 4.60g·kg-1·SS-1, and their median diameter can reach several thousands of micrometers or larger.
