Leaching Characteristics of Lead from Waste CRT Glass under Condition of Acid Rain

E-waste, especially Cathode Ray Tubes (CRT), has become a global environmental concern. CRT glass contains high levels of lead oxide and other metal oxides, which makes it very hard to be recycled and have to be managed as hazardous waste. This study discussed the influence of saturated degree and particle size on the leaching characteristics of lead under acid rainfall condition. The results showed that the lead concentration in leachate increased with an increase of saturated degree. With a total number of 30,000ml manual rainwater applied, the total amount of lead leached from CRT leaded glass under saturated degree of 77.4% and 17.8% were 2.36mg and 1.12mg respectively. The total amount of lead leached from CRT glass with particle ranges of lmm<D <9.5mm, 9.5mm<D<16mm and 16mm<D<22mm were 0.55mg, 0.50mg and 0.40mg respectively. In general, the lead concentration in leachate under acid rainfall was higher than the environmental quality standard for drinking water (0.01mg/L). The lead concentration was higher than the environmental quality standard for surface water Ⅲ (0.05mg/L), posing potential environmental risk under condition of high saturated degree and small particle size.
