Lead Extraction from Mechanically Activated Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) Funnel Glass

The cathode ray tube (CRT) monitor is widely used because of its good performance and low price. The CRT funnel glass contains high content of lead and is regarded as a hazardous waste. The research on lead recovery from scrap CRT funnel glass will become highlighted. The mechanical activation method was used as pretreatment process in this study. The characteristics of lead extraction from the activated CRT funnel glass by using HCl-NaCl solution as leaching agent were reported. And the mechanical activation made the lead leaching rate increasing from 1% to 90%. The effects of leaching time, temperatures and solid-liquid ratio on lead extraction rate were also discussed. The results showed that the lead recovery rate from activated CRT funnel glass increased with the HC1 concentrations at the range of 0.5-1.0 mol/L, however, decreased at the range of 1.0-4.0 mol/L. The optimal HCL concentration was determined as 0.5 mol/L. As leaching temperatures increasing from 50℃ to 95℃, the lead recovery rate increased from 10% to 90%. The temperature had greater impact on the lead recovery rate among the several factors. In addition, with the leaching time prolonging and the NaCl concentration increasing, lead recovery rate gradually increased. The maximum recovery rate can reach 90%.
