Vaccum Pyrolysis of TV Housings in a Two-Step Reaction System
The pyrolysis of flame retarded TV housings (high impact polystyrene, HIPS) containing heptabromodiphenyl ether(H7BDE) and.octabromodiphenyl ether (O8BDE) was performed under controlled temperature programmed pyrolysis conditions (two steps) to understand the decomposition behaviour and evolution of brominated hydrocarbons from the two polybromodiphenyl ethers. The heating rate of the controlled pyrolysis procedure was defined by thermogravimetry test. The liquid products were analysed by gas chro-matographs equipped with mass selective detector. The inorganic bromine was analysed by ion chromato-graph. The pyrolysis of the samples in two steps significantly affected the composition of brominated hydrocarbons and the concentration of main decomposition products. The results indicated that about 80% bromine evolved in the form of HBr. GC/MS analysis confirmed that the organobromine compounds were mainly in step 1 liquid products leaving less brominated hydrocarbons in the step 2 liquid products. Although the main pyrolysis products in both steps were the same, the concentration had great differences.
