An Ideal Solution to Translation:A Relevance-Theoretic Account

Relevance Theory (RT), proposed by Dan Sperber and Deirdre Wilson, contains three key concepts: relevance, contextual effect and processing effort, taking relevance as an invariant and context as a variant. RT also differentiates cognitive context and the context in the traditional sense, the former comprising alternative propositions for the listener or the reader to choose from. According to Ernst-August Gutt’s research in translation guided by RT and other scholars’ study on contextual factors linked to the translator’s subjectivity, we find that the translator’s subjectivity has a direct influence on the contextual effect of the target text and the processing effort of the target reader. So RT, as a macro theory, can account for various subjective problems in translation in an ideal way.
