Preparation of boron in KCI-KBF4 molten salt
The optimum conditions of molten salts electrolysis in the KCI-KBF4 system was researched by orthogonal experiment, which were set as temperature 750 ℃, KBF4:KCI 1:4 (wt.%), electrolysis time 3 h and cathode current density 1.5 A/cm2. The purity of boron was more than 96% and the current efficiency was more than 80% were obtained under this condition. Amorphous boron powder electrolyzed from KCI-KBF4 system was agglomeration seriously, and the particle size became larger as the electrolysis time prolonged. The main impurities in the boron were Fe, Si, Cr, Ni and C, etc. The cyclic voltammetry was introduced for the electrochemical mechanism research. The mechanism of boron deposition in the KCI-KBF4 system was one-step reversible process with 3-electron. The process was diffusion controlled and the diffusion coefficient of reactive substance BF4- was 1.64×10-5 cm2/s.
