Research on preparation and properties of Al-Mn alloy coating

Al-Mn alloy coatings were obtained on iron substrate from AlC^-NaCl-KCl low temperature molten salt with a controlled content of anhydrous MnCb, adding CeCl3 in the molten salt. The microstructure and properties of Al-Mn alloy coatings were researched, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and polarization curves were used to investigate the composition, surface morphology, phase structure and corrosion resistance of the obtained deposits. The results showed that the micro-structure and properties of Al-Mn alloy coatings were influenced by Mn content. A single amorphous Al6Mn phase alloy coating was obtained when Mn content was 27.6 wt.%. When the content of Mn was 37.7%, a mixture of crystalline Al and amorphous Al6Mn was obtained. The pitting potential of the single amorphous phase alloys coating was enhanced about 350 mV. The corrosion resistance of single amorphous phase alloys was better, and hardness was higher. By adding CeCl3 in the molten salt, the surface coatings (Mn 27.6 wt.%) were smooth, and crystallites were dense and uniform.
