Research of preparation of nickel foam by molten salts electro-deoxidation

The electro-deoxidation of porous nickel precursors in molten calcium chlorides was researched. The powder mixtures of NiO powder with methylcellulose or graphite powders were compacted into pellets and sintered at 1173 K. In this experimental condition, the pore-forming material in the sample could be completely removed in the process of sintering. The foams were deoxidized in a molten system of CaCfeNaCl at 1073 K with sintered NiO as cathode and graphite as anode. During the experimental process, the free oxygen ions were released in the electrodeoxidation steps catalyzed by CaO. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). It is found that the NiO cathode with 15% methylcellulose distributed uniformly after electrolysis with no flaky substance observed. The electrolysis is more complete, the particle distribution is well-distributed with good conductivity, high yield and more holes.
