Measuring and modeling of viscosities of selected CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2-FeO slags

Viscosities of selected CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2-FeO slags were measured by rotary cylinder method in the temperature range of 1673-1823 K. The samples of the slags were subjected to chemical composition and X-ray analyses. 21 slag compositions were selected in the composition range 37.80 wt.%-56.70 wt.% CaO, 22.68 wt.%-56.70 wt.% A12O3 and 0-25.52 wt.% SiO2, of which the mass ratio of MgO was kept at about 5, and FeO was kept at 0.5. The effect of increasing temperature was investigated and it was shown that viscosity decreased, as expected, with increasing temperature. Results showed that the optical basicity had great influence on viscosity. When CaO content was lower, the slag viscosity decreased slightly with increasing optical basicity, and then dramatically increased with increasing optical basicity. When CaO content was higher, the viscosity increased with the increase of optical basicity. The Iida model gave good consistency with the measured viscosity values.
