Synthesis of silicon carbonitride porous ceramics derived from different organo-silicon precursors

Silicon carbonitride porous ceramics were prepared by pyrolysis of different organo-silicon polymers precursors via chlorosilanes in reaction with bis (trimethylsilyl)carbodiimide (BTSC). The thermogravimetry coupled with FTIR-Mass spectroscopy was employed to study the pyrolysis process. The ceramic yield and releasing gas species during pyrolysis were different due to three different chlorosilane-derived precursors. However, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images revealed that all the SiCN ceramics pyrolysed at 1000 ℃ in N2 exhibit an amorphous porous microstructure. Tens of micron of pores were detected. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra showed main chemical bonds of Si-N and Si-C and little of N=C=N bond in the ceramic matrix.
