Chlorine evolution potential on rare-earth oxide-coated electrode in chloride melts
Both La2O3 and Nd2O3-coated graphite electrodes were prepared through thermal decomposition method and chlorine evolution potential on the two electrodes in KCl-NaCl-MgCl2 melts at 973 K were examined by cyclic voltammograms, polarization curves, chronopotentiograms and chronoamperograms. The results indicated that La2O3-coated and Nd2O3-coated graphite electrodes showed onset oxidation potentials of 90 and 70 mV lower than the spectrum-pure graphite, but La2O3-coated graphite gave a much higher oxidation current under the potential of 1.2 V and more positive cholrine evolution potential of 0.2 V at the current density of 0.1 A/cm2 than that of spectroscopic-pure graphite electrode, which presented a good electrocatalytic reactivity for chlorine evolution.
