Direct electrochemical preparation of zirconium from solid ZrO2 pellet in CaCl2-NaCl eutectic melt at 700 C

Zirconium was prepared by direct electrochemical reduction of porous zirconium oxide pellet in CaCl2NaCl eutectic melt at 700 ℃. The reduction mechanism of ZrO2 to Zr was investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV). The product was characterized by X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Due to the similar dissociation potential of ZrO2 and UO2, this method offered a nonradioactive sample to reprocess oxide spent nuclear fuel as well as to produce refractory metals at lower temperature.
