Preparation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural from fructose in acidic ionic liquids

Catalytic conversion of fructose into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) in several kinds of acidic ionic liquid acting both as solvent and catalyst was explored. A fructose conversion of 99.9% with a 5-HMF yield of 81.7% was achieved in 30 min reaction time at 110 ℃ in HMIMC1. No large decrease in 5-HMF yield occurred for initial fructose concentrations of up to 20 wt.% in HMIMC1, and it was confirmed that the ionic liquid could be recycled and exhibited constant activity for 5 successive trials. Compared with HMIMC1, BMIMHSO4 and HMIMHSO4 were proven to be less effective with lower 5-HMF yields for the preparation of 5-HMF due to the formation of black solid humins.
